Brisbane Teeth Whitening

Looking for a whiter smile?

River City Dental can provide professional teeth whitening treatments that can give you a whiter, brighter smile in just one visit.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of removing stains from the enamel of your teeth by applying a special bleaching material. The bleach material penetrates the outer layer of the enamel and takes out stains that cannot be removed otherwise. Professional teeth whitening systems are administered and overseen by the dental team at River City Dental. During your initial consultation, your dental health and colour of your teeth will be assessed, and you will be advised which treatment option is best for you.

What are my options for professional teeth whitening?

There are two options for professional teeth whitening:

  • In-surgery whitening
  • Take-home whitening

Both of these approaches use a peroxide-based bleach solution to whiten your teeth.

In-surgery whitening

At River City Dental, the Philips Zoom! teeth whitening system is used. This involves applying a strong peroxide gel to your teeth for a period of time. During the appointment, a laser or other light may be used to increase the effect of the bleaching. Regardless of whether the light is used or not, you will leave the dental surgery with noticeably whiter teeth.

Take-home whitening

We also offer an option of a take-home professional teeth whitening treatment. You will have an initial consultation appointment where impressions will be taken to allow us to make custom made teeth trays. You will be supplied with the trays plus a supply of peroxide-based tooth bleaching solution. The trays are worn for a period of time each day according to your dentist’s instructions. Generally, the take-home kit lasts a few weeks and your teeth become noticeably whiter over this time.

All teeth whitening treatments may discolour over time, but you can complete a boost treatment at home with your trays or we offer an In-Surgery Boost option for those patients who have used the take-home whitening kit.

What are the advantages of the various professional teeth whitening options?

Professional in-surgery whitening provides the most immediate results and the procedure is completed in a 90min appointment. Professional take-home whitening kits have a similar effectiveness to in-surgery whitening and are less costly than the in-surgery whitening.

What are the disadvantages of the various teeth whitening options?

Professional in-surgery whitening is the most costly teeth whitening option but provides the quickest result. It usually requires some take home treatment to achieve the most lasting outcome.

Professional take-home teeth whitening often takes several weeks to produce the desired outcome. The effectiveness of the teeth whitening depends on your ability to comply with wearing the trays as directed.

What are the risks of teeth whitening?

Some inherent risks exist with any teeth whitening system. You must take the following factors into consideration when deciding whether to bleach your teeth.

There is risk that your teeth or gums will become sensitive to the bleach solution and you may need to discontinue the treatment before the desired tooth colour is achieved.

In the most extreme cases, teeth whitening may lead to tooth sensitivity that requires root canal treatment in order for it to resolve.

Teeth whitening will not alter the colour of existing dental restorations. Sometimes dental work must be replaced if you want it to match your new, lighter teeth after tooth whitening is done.

Those people with poor dental home care or diets high in staining foods such as coffee, red wine, tea or berries may find their teeth become stained again more quickly than expected. Normally teeth whitening must be repeated periodically to maintain the brightness of your smile.
