Choosing the Right Type of Dental Filling!

Cavities can occur in different regions of the mouth, so it is important that we take all factors into consideration when selecting the most appropriate treatment. Some decay may not require treatment at first glance but could develop further down the line if left untreated.

Treating dental decay is an important step in maintaining overall dental health. River City Dental offers minimally invasive and affordable treatment options for treating dental cavities, with literature indicating fillings may last up to 5 years providing a healthy diet and optimal home care is maintained!

What is a Dental Filling?

Dental fillings are a common procedure used to repair cavities in teeth. A dental filling is often necessary if you experience tooth decay or trauma. A Dental X-ray will diagnose the problem and early treatment before it becomes severe enough for surgery or removal is recommended. When acid producing bacteria in plaque cause damage to the outer layer of your tooth enamel, fillings may be an appropriate solution to restore your tooth and ultimately your smile. If not treated, dental decay can spread deeper into the tooth and cause nerve damage or damage to surrounding teeth.

There are a variety of different materials that can be used to fill cavities in the teeth, including:

  • Gold
  • Silver Amalgam
  • Composite
  • Ceramic
  • Glass Ionomers

Tooth decay is a problem for many Australian children and adults. The signs of tooth damage can be hidden, so it’s important to visit your dentist on time every six months if you want the best dental care possible!

Some frequently asked questions about dental fillings:

What is the process of getting a filling?

The process consists of several steps. Depending on the size and location of the cavity, often  a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area around the affected tooth, and then the dentist removes the decayed part of the tooth. The cavity is thoroughly cleaned, then filled with a composite resin material to replace the decayed part of the tooth and to seal the tooth against further infection.

Will the filled tooth hurt after the process?

After the anesthetic has worn off the tooth it can be normal for a tooth to be sensitive to cold or hot foods and drinks for up to 1 month.  There should not be an ache associated with tooth.  Care should be taken initially with biting and chewing on the filled tooth, and very hot or cold foods should be avoided. Pain or sensitivity to cold and hot may be noticed around the filled tooth and may be present for a number of days but should improve on a daily basis. However, if you feel significant pain in the filled tooth or the pain is getting worse, please contact us at River City Dental to discuss.

How long will it take to get a filling?

Like any procedure, the length of time taken will depend on some variables. A simple to reach, small cavity can be filled in 30 to 40 minutes, but if the cavity is larger or in a tooth that is harder to reach, it could take up to an hour, or even more. Of course this is another reason to visit River City Dental for regular checkups – to find and treat small problems before they become large ones!
