Dental Veneers Indooroopilly
All that people see when they look at an open mouth are the surfaces of the front and bottom teeth. Yet if these surfaces are stained, chipped or damaged, it can have a big impact on a person’s self-confidence and in turn limit their social involvement and overall enjoyment of life.
One of the greatest things about cosmetic dentistry is how it empowers people to live the lives they want, by giving them back the self-confidence they deserve. While there are many modern-day techniques that a dentist can use to improve the appearance of teeth, one of the simplest and instantly effective are veneers.
They do not work for all cosmetic issues, particularly when these issues are extensive, but they are a highly popular and affordable option for a lot of people – being a low risk and conservative option that makes a huge difference.
What are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are a common and highly popular natural looking dental restoration. A dental veneer is a thin shell or covering which is designed to mimic the appearance and colour of teeth. It attaches to the front, outward-facing surface of your damaged, chipped or otherwise imperfect tooth to alter its appearance quickly and effectively.
They are commonly made from porcelain. People will sometimes choose to have just one dental veneer added to their problematic tooth. However, others opt to use veneers as part of their strategy for freshening up their overall smile. Used together veneers can create a consistent effect and improve overall smile aesthetics.
What is the process of having dental veneers fitted?
The process to getting them fitted starts with a consult with your local Dentist at St Lucia. From there your dentist may be able to recommend veneers as a solution if they are appropriate for your circumstances.
Most veneers will require some preparation of the underlying tooth. This may involve grinding down the tooth structure to ensure that veneers can be placed and bonded effectively. Once this has been done the St Lucia dentist will generally then take a 3D scan. After the first appointment they will use this 3D imaging to design a veneer for your tooth. Veneers are then created in the lab using this mode.
Once the veneer has been prepared, the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned to ensure an optimum bond, then the dental veneer will be attached to your tooth with a permanent bonding agent or ‘cement’. This may or may not involve anaesthetic.
When are Dental Veneers helpful and when are they not?
They are helpful for a range of situations. Here are a few of the situations in which veneers may be helpful:
- If you have overly spaced or crowded teeth
- If you have discoloured or stained teeth
- If you have uneven or poorly shaped teeth, including pointy teeth
- If you have badly chipped teeth
- If you have undersized teeth
Their main benefit lies in the fact that they can change the appearance of the tooth by changing its size, shape and colour. They are also more effective when traditional tooth whitening approaches are not sufficient. An added benefit is that they will not stain as your natural teeth can. One of the reasons they are popular is that they are one of the most minimally intrusive cosmetic options and therefore represent less of a commitment in terms of cost and procedure.
The limitations associated with dental veneers are that they may not be appropriate if there is an underlying problem, disease or concern that needs to be addressed in its own right, or by more extensive procedures such as dental crowns.
As with all dental treatments at your dentist, there are things you can do to ensure the veneers last for as long as possible. In the case of veneers these precautions include avoiding chewing on hard objects like ice, not opening packets with your teeth, wearing a mouthguard during sports and chewing fingernails. Normal brushing, flossing and rinsing also remain important.
Over time, veneers may need replacement, but they usually last around 10 years. They cannot be removed once placed and will need to be replaced with another veneer.
