Fissure Seals

At River City Dental, we focus strongly on preventive methods of dental care and treatment, and this means bringing children in for checkups and any required treatment from an early age. Something that is often beneficial for young children is fissure seals, or sealants.

Fissure seals are used to fill grooves and pits on the chewing surface of molar and pre-molar teeth, usually for children between the ages of six and 13. However, they are suitable for patients of all ages if required.

Fissures that are deep and narrow harbor food particles and can be very difficult to clean properly, leading to bacteria growth and eventually a cavity in the tooth. Sealing the fissures is a simple way of preventing tooth decay and the need for fillings.

The seal is made from a hard resin coating, either white or clear, and application is straightforward. There is virtually no downtime, and normal eating and drinking can take place immediately after application.

Fissure seals are a sensible way to prevent more serious problems with your children’s dental health and hygiene.

Some frequently asked questions about fissure seals:

What are the overall benefits of fissure seals?
As a preventive measure, they are less expensive and less invasive than having to have fillings.
Is there any pain involved in application?
As the procedure is non-invasive, it is quick and painless. No anaesthetic is required.
How long will fissure seals last?
Often seals will last for several years, but like fillings and crowns, this is very dependent on individual teeth and the patient’s care and hygiene regimen.
Is any special at home care required?
The teeth with fissure seals can be cleaned and flossed in the normal way. Any loosening or erosion of the seal will compromise oral hygiene, so regular dental checkups are important.
