Gum Lifts

At River City Dental we offer a range of aesthetic treatments to create or enhance your biggest asset – a winning smile. A minimally invasive but very effective treatment is gum lifts, also known as gum contouring or gingivectomy.

This procedure involves removing excess gum tissue that may be covering too much of the teeth. Gum lifts can be used to correct a ‘gummy smile’ and improve the overall balance and ratio of the teeth and gums. It may also be used to change the appearance of the shape of the tooth perhaps from a square tooth shape to a more rectangular shape. Gum lifts may also be used with veneer treatment to further enhance the appearance of the teeth if the natural teeth are discoloured or misshapen.

A gum lift can be performed on a single tooth or on all the front teeth, depending on individual requirements. It is a painless procedure, using local anesthetic to numb the required area. Excess gum tissue is then removed by laser or a scalpel. Stitches may be required – which will mean taking extra care during the recovery period – but generally healing and recovery is complete within one to two weeks.

As with any dental procedure, any excessive pain or bleeding afterwards which is different from what you will be told to expect during the healing period, should be discussed as soon as possible with your dentist.

Complications or problems with a gum lift are very rare, and it is considered a safe and minimally invasive dental cosmetic procedure which can make a dramatic difference to a person’s smile and give them greater confidence, without the ‘down time’ of more complicated – and expensive -procedures.

Some frequently asked questions about gum lifts:

Is it a completely painless procedure?

Because the trimming/removal of the excess tissue is done following local anesthetic administered to the area, this part of the process will be painless. However, before the procedure your dentist may ‘mark up’ the area of the gums to remove with a special pen – this may feel a little uncomfortable. As always, before the procedure your dentist will explain this and look at the best way to make you comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.

Is recovery painful?

Recovery from this procedure generally takes one to two weeks, and a little bit of soreness and sensitivity may occur. Your dentist will discuss after care following the procedure, and may recommend the use of painrelief for a short time. As always, any excessive pain, discomfort or bleeding following the procedure should be discussed with your dentist. Extra care should be taken with brushing and flossing during recovery.

Will the removed gum tissue grow back?

No – the procedure is permanent, and the removed tissue will not grow back.

What if I’m not happy with how my teeth look after a gum lift?

The results of every gum lift will depend considerably on each person’s teeth. If the teeth are discoloured or uneven it may be necessary to look at additional procedures such as teeth whitening or having veneers fitted. Please see our website pages for information on additional services. Your dentist can give you more information either before or after the procedure.
