INDOOROOPILLY CHILDREN’S DENTIST
Is it time for your child to visit the dentist?
The team at River City Dental are passionate about educating children about dental care from an early age. As soon as baby’s first tooth appears, its time to visit the dentist.
The main aim of initial dental visits is to familiarise your child with the practice, Dr John, the staff and the surgery environment. The first appointment at our Indooroopilly children’s dentist practice will usually involve a chat about your current dental care routine, a count of how many teeth they have and a discussion about the foods that are good and bad for teeth. A ride in the dentist chair is not always appropriate for all first-time visitors especially if they are anxious or apprehensive, so young children may be examined whilst being held by their parent.
At subsequent dental visits, Dr John will conduct a thorough dental examination, check that your child is brushing correctly and provide instruction on flossing to help them establish a good oral hygiene routine. Dr John recommends regular 6 monthly check-ups for children of all ages.

Fissure sealants
A fissure sealant is a protective coating placed on the chewing surface of the back teeth to protect against cavities. The sealant covers the deep pits and grooves of the teeth, protecting them from harmful bacterial plaque, which may cause tooth decay.
Mouthguards
A custom-fitted mouthguard for children playing contact sport is a necessity. Mouthguards can help protect your children’s teeth from serious sporting injuries, such as broken jaws, fractured teeth, knocked out teeth and cut lips and tongues. Call us today to book an appointment to have a custom-fitted mouthguard made for your child.
Emergency dental care
Despite our best efforts, we all know that accidents happen and there can be serious consequences for our children’s teeth. In the event of dental trauma to your child, please ring the practice as soon as possible and ask for an emergency appointment.
Some frequently asked questions about children’s dental care:
When should I start brushing baby’s teeth?
It is important to start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears. This is best done using a small, soft children’s brush with no toothpaste, until 18 months of age (ADA.org.au)
When should I bring my child for their first dental appointment?
It is important to familiarise your child with the dentist as young as possible and to make it a fun experience. We suggest bringing your child for a visit to our Indooroopilly children’s dentist practice before they turn 1, after they get their first tooth.
What can I do to ensure my child has healthy teeth?
We recommend you follow these steps to ensure your children maintain healthy teeth.
- Brush twice a day – Help your children to brush their teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush
- Floss daily – Help your child floss between teeth that are touching each other to remove food and plaque
- Make healthy food choices and drink water – choose foods that are low in sugar and avoid high sugar beverages such as soft drinks, cordials, fruit juices and sports drinks
- Visit your dentist every 6 months
- Wear a custom-fitted mouthguard for sport
Does my child need orthodontic treatment?
As your child’s teeth develop you may begin to worry about overcrowding of teeth and problems with their bite. We will assess your child during their visits and refer them to a trusted orthodontist if we believe they may need specialised treatment.
Can I use the Child Dental Benefits Scheme?
Yes – we welcome families using the Child Dental Benefits Scheme to our Brisbane dental clinic.
The Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS) is an initiative established by the Australian Government and run by Medicare. It can provide eligible children up to $1,000 credit over 2 calendar years to cover part or full cost of a range of dental services. You can check with the Department of Human Services to see if your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefit Scheme.
If you wish to use the Child Dental Benefits Scheme at River City Dental, you should check how much remaining credit you have up to the $1000 limit. Let our team know that you are wishing to use the CDBS and we may inform you of what the dental service will cost and whether CDBS will cover the services.
