Indooroopilly Dentures

Dentures, or false teeth as they used to be called, are something that many people may need to consider as they get older. While some are lucky enough to keep all their natural teeth into old age, for many of us things like wear and tear, accidents, and decay can compromise natural teeth so that they will have to be removed.

As with many medical and technical advances, modern dentures have improved over the decades. At River City Dental we are dedicated to best practice advice, equipment, and techniques, and we can assist with the best options for replacing missing natural teeth. Innovative techniques such as digital dentistry ensure that the dentures are custom fitted to the patient’s mouth for a more realistic and comfortable outcome.

Most dentures today are made from acrylic. While they are generally long-lasting, like natural teeth they may be damaged by wear and tear such as teeth grinding, or accidents and breakages. Changes to the gums may also mean that dentures will need to be replaced after several years.

If you need dentures your River City Dental professional will schedule a consultation for a comprehensive discussion of your requirements, and if you wish to proceed they will look at your natural teeth and give options for matching tooth and gum shades, and make any mouth measurements necessary.

Either partial or full dentures can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several, or all the teeth on either or both jaws. Your dentist will be able to advise you on caring for your dentures and when you may need them replaced, based on your general mouth and gum health and dental hygiene routine.

Some frequently asked questions about dentures:

Will my dentures feel strange at first?
Like any major dental repair or improvement, dentures may take a little while to feel normal. Care should be taken initially while eating and chewing, and if you hear your dentures ‘clicking’ it may mean that you need to come back to the dentist to have the fit checked. Generally, after a few weeks everything should feel normal and comfortable – but if not, please schedule a checkup.
Is it easy to care for dentures?
It’s not really any more involved than caring for natural teeth, and even easier when you consider you take them out to clean! Toothpaste is not recommended as it can scratch denture material, so your dentist can recommend a denture paste. Otherwise, a mild soap with water is fine – just make sure they are all cleaned thoroughly and regularly.
Should dentures be taken out overnight?
Yes, this is important to prevent fungal infections. Keep cleaned dentures in a clean, dry container overnight and rinse them under fresh cold or slightly warm water before putting them in again in the morning.
Is it necessary to replace missing teeth with dentures?
While not everyone replaces their missing teeth, doing so is strongly recommended by most dental professionals. As well as cosmetic issues, the wider issues and problems are bone loss in the jaw, which can compromise the remaining teeth and cause problems chewing. Your dentist will be able to discuss all the pros and cons with you.
Some patients will be able to have dental implants to replace missing teeth instead of a denture. In come cases, a number of dental implants will be placed to allow the denture or a dental bridge to be attached to the implants rather than having a traditional full denture.
