BRISBANE PORCELAIN DENTAL CROWNS

Porcelain crowns could be the solution for perfecting your smile and strengthening your teeth.

At River City Dental, we pride ourselves on helping our customers achieve their dream smile and fully functional teeth. We offer a wide range of treatments options, with dental crowns being the solution of choice for many patients who wish to cover damaged teeth or gaps. Our porcelain crowns have proven a highly popular treatment option over the years and for good reason.

What are porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns consist of a tooth-shaped and tooth-coloured porcelain cap that is bonded to existing teeth that have suffered damage or chipping, to restore their original appearance, size and functionality. After existing teeth have been suitably prepared, crowns are placed over them above the gumline and bonded so that they stay in place. The result is that damaged and chipped teeth or gaps between teeth are cosmetically corrected. At the same time, this may reduce the risk of teeth breaking due to structural weakness.

Crowns may be helpful for patients with:

  • Damaged or chipped teeth
  • Missing teeth or gaps in teeth
  • Teeth that have been worn down
  • Cracked teeth that need strengthening

Some frequently asked questions about crowns:

What are the benefits of having a porcelain crown?

Porcelain crowns may provide patients with some of the following benefits:

  • Crowns can restore the original or desired appearance of your smile.
  • Crowns can protect weak or damaged teeth from further deterioration.
  • Crowns can be placed on a dental implant.
  • Crowns can protect teeth after a root canal has been performed.
  • Crowns can help to improve the appearance of your smile
What risks are associated with having a porcelain crown?

While dental crowns are a highly popular and well-proven treatment, some patients do experience issues . These may include:

  • The possibility of crowns chipping, becoming loose, or falling off.
  • Increased hot/cold sensitivity in the treated tooth for a short period
  • Possibility of root canal treatment being required after crown placement (approximately 6%)

Talk to our dental team to gain a full understanding of the pros and cons of porcelain dental crowns. For anxious patients, anaesthesia and other sedation options may help reduce anxiety related to the procedure.

What does the crown process involve?

The crown process involves an initial consultation during which an experienced dentist will examine your mouth to look for cracking, decay and chipping. Prior to the crown procedure, any areas of decay will be treated and if root canals are needed these will be completed prior to your crown visit.

If no operations such as root canals are necessary, the dentist will then prepare your tooth, undertake a digital scan of the prepared tooth and fit a temporary crown using a non-permanent bonding agent. This allows a period of up to 2 weeks for the permanent crown to be constructed by the dental laboratory.

In the next appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and undertake any necessary cleaning, before bonding on the permanent crown or crowns. Afterwards, our friendly dental team will provide instructions on post-treatment care and will recommend arranging check-ups to ensure that crowns remain ideally bonded and that biting and chewing are comfortable.

At River City Dental, we also use CEREC technology to provide dental crowns where appropriate. This enables us to fit dental crowns for suitable patients during a single appointment, increasing convenience. Our CEREC technology performs a digital scan on your teeth and then creates a ceramic restoration which is custom-made to restore your tooth or teeth to their desired state. After preparing teeth by removing any damaged or decayed areas, our experienced dentists can then fit and bond this dental crown during the same appointment.

Can I have crowns on my front teeth?

As a matter of fact, the front teeth are a common position where dental crowns are used. Being front and centre, these teeth are highly visible and therefore many people desire to address any imperfections with them. Crowns will work on any teeth, from front teeth to molars, and on top of providing aesthetic improvements, they will also improve strength and longevity.

Are there any post-treatment limitations once I have crowns?

Most post-treatment limitations come immediately after the procedure, while the patient is still recovering. These issues are temporary and include:

  • Gum and tooth sensitivity or inflammation near around where the crown was fitted.
  • Numbness in the jaw and mouth due to anaesthetic or numbing agents.
  • A need to avoid sticky/chewy foods, hard foods, and hot foods or beverages.
  • A preference for chewing on the other side of the mouth to the crowns.

Once these initial issues have resolved, most patients find that their mouth functionality is restored to normal. Porcelain crowns generally last for 10 to 15 years if properly cared for. Like ordinary teeth, they are vulnerable to chipping or cracking, but repair and replacements may generally be available in these instances.
