Wisdom Teeth Removal

Named because they generally make an appearance in the years of young adulthood, wisdom teeth are something of an unknown quantity – some people have no problems at all, whereas others will have complications that will involve significant dental work.

Believed to be part of human anatomy that is no longer necessary due to our modern diet, people generally have four wisdom teeth, one at each side of the upper and lower jaws. Problems will often develop as human jaws are usually no longer large enough to accommodate these extra teeth, and they will often remain ‘impacted’ or beneath the gums.

Wisdom teeth that ‘erupt’ (start to grow out of the gum) may cause problems with infection as their location at the back corners of the mouth make them harder to clean than other teeth. Food can get trapped and bacteria builds up and results in an infection. Your dentist can treat the infection with antibiotics and then remove the tooth or teeth.

If wisdom teeth do erupt, they often cause problems with overcrowding of the mouth and can cause other teeth to move or become damaged. Some people with erupted wisdom teeth may be lucky enough to have enough room in their jaw to accommodate them, but for most people removal will be recommended.

At River City Dental we provide holistic, age appropriate, preventive dental care, and an x-ray may be recommended to monitor the progress of wisdom teeth and proactively plan treatment that may be required.

Some frequently asked questions about wisdom teeth removal:

How will I know if my wisdom teeth are causing problems?

Any pain, bleeding, or inflammation at the back of the jaw should be checked by your dentist. However, as with all things dental, prevention is the best treatment, and regular check ups and x-rays will allow your dentist to monitor the situation closely.

Is removal of wisdom teeth painful?

If the tooth has erupted sufficiently, removal can be done in the dental clinic in the same way as any other tooth removal, with local anesthetic, meaning that it will be completely painless. There may be some residual pain after the tooth is removed, but this can be easily treated with painkillers.

In cases where the tooth is still impacted but needs to be removed, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon. Removal of impacted teeth can be quite complex, and may require surgery and general anesthetic for the best results.

Can I have more than one wisdom tooth removed at the same time?

If the removal is a straightforward extraction of erupted teeth, this should be possible, unless your dentist advises against it for any reason.

What is the average age for removal of wisdom teeth?

For most people, if removal is necessary it will be between the ages of 17 and 25. Even if teeth are not expected to present a problem until later in life, earlier removal is usually easier as the roots and bones haven’t fully formed. As well, any post-removal recovery is likely to be quicker.

As this is a very individual issue, for best results have a discussion with your River City Dental professional to get the best advice for you.
